CCTV...Security or Big Brother!?

Is Britian turning into a nanny state. Over 20% of all the worlds CCTV cameras are on the streets of Britian. We are caught on camera atleast 300 times a day. There is now a CCTV camera for every 14 people living in Britain.

Has another one of our freedoms yet again been removed. I personally don't think so. It has been proven that crime has been reduced because of it. The killers of Damalola Taylor were caught because of CCTV in the area and if it means that we need over 4 million cameras on the streets of Britain then so be it!

Is our society turning into an enormous game of Big Brother! I don't know!!

fascinating facts!

personally, in don't see a problem with CCTV cameras when they are preventing crime, or benefiting society in some way. if they are reducing crime, or the amount of litter people throw away then they are a benefit to not only society but the world.

the extremes in 1984 will never be existent in this country, I mean come on, having telescreens as the focus point of each room and thought crime and all that- that will never happen!

yes CCTV is a problem it is taking away our freedom and in fact it has been proven the oposite that infact the crime rate has not gone down since the increase of CCTV cameras. Yes it is true that some CCTV cameras have caught criminal footage on them but there are alot of cameras out there that are not used for that purpose. In Europe the country with the most security cameras is Britian and yet we do not have the lowest crime rate which you would think we did have if these cameras were being used correctly.

Crime rates still may have gone up but due to CCTV they haven't increased as much. Thta what I was trying to say!

If you haven't got anything to hide then you shouldn't worry about CCTV!

Sadly the if, as u say, 'the killers of Damilola Taylor were caught because of CCTV' that would only show that CCTV may help in crime prosecution not necessarily in crime prevention...because this crime was not prevented. I'm not sure it really even helped in the prosecution in this case as after years of investivation it eventually came down to issues such as forensics and DNA.

People who want to sell CCTVs and other interested parties say CCTVs help to reduce crime but even the Homeoffice admits in a research report on an investigation into CCTV schemes:

...the majority of the schemes evaluated did not reduce crime and even where there was a reduction this was mostly not due to CCTV; nor did CCTV schemes make people feel safer, much less change their behaviour.
Home Office - Crime Prevention Effects of CCTV: A Systematic Review

The £170 million that has been spent from 1999-2003 on CCTVs might have been spent on better things...like dealing with the causes of criminal behaviour...real crime prevention.
